Help for the homeless is lacking
I work for a homeless program in So. Calif. and we are always looking for resources of housing and shelters and it seems there are very few resources available. There nseems to be programs but most homeless don't meet the criteria to get into the programs.. These programs might look good on paper but fall short in actually supplying the homeless with what is needed. Most homeless have been shuffled from program to program with the promise of help put never get it or what is offered doesn't address their actual issues. Housing programs will not work unless you also offer counseling to deal with the issues that made them homeless in the first place and teaching them to make better choices and how to become a part a productive member of society. Most of the programs I have seen will not help you if you have more the 3 children and if the children are over 10 yrs old. They want you to find a job but do not show you how to effectively find and keep a job. They do not provide counseling services to assist with dealing with the trauma of being homeless. The cities do not want shelters in their cities because they are affraid that will bring homeless from other areas to their city. Homeless very rarely travel away from the area they are comfortable in and know. You have to get the cronically homeless in a place they feel safe before you can treat their issues. When they feel safe they will then be more willing to receive mental health treatment, drug treatment and attend classes to show them how to get back into society and prosper. Government needs to stop passing the buck on this issue and actually take steps that really work instead of hit and miss programs that don't fix the problem just are a bandaid.. I am angry that there are not really many places to really help the homeless. Get off your duffs and act..
